Alex Rodriguez appears to be weighing in on the “Bennifer 2.0” breakup from the sidelines.
The retired MLB star, 49, posted a cryptic message on his Instagram Story Monday — the same day that his ex-fiancée, Jennifer Lopez, filed for divorce from her husband Ben Affleck.
Rodriguez shared a post citing one of his own quotes, which read, “You either go one way or the other, you might as well be the one deciding the direction.”
The former New York Yankee started dating Lopez, 55, in 2017. They announced their engagement in March 2019.
“We’re really happy,” Lopez said in an interview with People after Rodriguez proposed to her in the Bahamas.
“We have [an] appreciation for where we are in our lives today, and that’s what we’re enjoying the most,” Rodriguez added at the time.
But in March 2021, Page Six broke the news that the pair called off their engagement.
The stars released a joint statement in April 2021 confirming their breakup.
“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so,” they said. “We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and each other’s children.”
Rodriguez has rarely commented on Lopez since their split, aside from when he told Entertainment Tonight in Aug. 2021 that their relationship was “incredible.”
“I had five years of an incredible life and partnership and also with my daughters,” said the athlete, who shares daughters Natasha, 19, and Ella, 16, with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis.
Since 2022, Rodriguez has been in a relationship with Jaclyn Cordeiro.
Meanwhile, Lopez got back together with Affleck shortly after her split from Rodriguez. The singer and the “Argo” director were initially together from 2002 to 2004.
As a reunited couple, Lopez and Affleck got engaged again in April 2022.
They tied the knot at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas in July 2022, and then went on to hold a second, more extravagant wedding at Affleck’s home in Riceboro, Georgia, on Aug. 20, 2022.
“Now, we know. And there [are] no questions and there is no kind of like, ‘Well, let’s see how this goes,’” Lopez said about her relationship with Affleck in an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music in Nov 2022.
“Like, ‘Nope, it’s me and you. That’s it. All the way, till the end. That’s it. It’s going to be us,’” she added.
Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck exactly two years to the day since their Georgia wedding ceremony.
She listed their official date of separation as April 26, 2024, which was shortly before the rumors of their split started when Lopez attended the Met Gala by herself.
According to a People report, Affleck had no interest in fixing his marriage to Lopez, which sparked her decision to file for divorce.
“She’s very disappointed and sad,” a source said about Lopez. “She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken.”
The exes, who have five children combined, reportedly didn’t sign a prenup.
