In recent times, thieves have become increasingly inventive, employing new and effective tactics for car theft that are causing concern globally.

A particularly concerning method involves the use of a water bottle as a signal by would-be carjackers. Initially reported in Limpopo, South Africa, this tactic has rapidly spread, with incidents also occurring in the United States.

Here’s how the scheme unfolds: when a potential carjacker selects a target, they strategically place a water bottle against one of the wheels to “mark” the vehicle. Typically, the bottle is positioned on the front passenger side wheel to avoid detection by the driver upon entering the car.

As the driver begins to move the vehicle, the empty plastic bottle produces unsettling crackling noises. Most drivers instinctively halt the car to investigate the source of the sound. This creates the perfect opportunity for the carjacker to strike.

If the driver leaves the keys in the car while the engine is running, the thief can quickly enter the vehicle and drive away, leaving the owner stranded. Alternatively, the thief may seize the chance to access the car and steal valuables left behind, such as a wallet or cellphone. In either scenario, the driver risks exposing themselves to potential danger when exiting the vehicle to inspect the source of the noise.

To safeguard against this tactic, Michigan radio station WCRZ recommends that drivers take a moment to inspect their vehicle’s wheels before entering. Look for any signs of tampering or unusual objects, particularly a water bottle wedged between the tire and the frame. If you spot anything suspicious, remain vigilant.

In such a situation, discreetly use your phone to dial 911. Inform the authorities about the potential threat and express your concern for your safety. Provide precise details about your location and your vehicle to ensure a prompt response from law enforcement.
