A new thriller has been compared to one of the biggest films ever made, with fans raving about the star-studded cast.

Netflix has recently added the gripping new film that fans are lauding, featuring some recognisable actors and spearheaded by a Hollywood A-lister.

Compared to hit superhero movie The Avengers, the 2023 flick also marks the return to the big screen for one of its stars, best known for their role as a villain on on HBO show, Game of Thrones.

The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September last year, and was just added to Netflix on Friday (25 April), bringing it to the attention of the millions of users on the platform.

Set in Ireland in 1974, the plot follows Finbar Murphy (Liam Neeson), a man who leads a quiet life in Glencolmcille, a coastal town far away and immune from the political violence that has taken over the rest of the country.

Aiming to leave his dark past behind him, a spanner is thrown in the works when a group of terrorists, led by Doireann (Kerry Condon), arrive in the town and do everything in their power to make Finbar reveal his secret identity.

Robert Lorenz directed the film, and with Oscar-winning Nesson heading up the cast with fellow nominees Kerry Condon and Ciarán Hinds, the big names don’t stop.

The film is called In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and you can view the trailer here:

The actor making his big return to the screen though is Jack Gleeson.

Best known for his role as the spoilt King Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones, the star famously quit acting after his character was killed with poison.

After finding that his passions lay elsewhere, he ventured into more theatre roles and later appeared in BBC miniseries Out of Her Mind.

He didn’t just mark his comeback with the appearance in this thriller though, also appearing in Sex Education and The Famous Five.

Colm Meaney plays Robert McQue in the film, and spoke to JOE about the comparisons of the film to The Avengers prior to its release.

“It’s a great cast and a great script, so yeah, fingers crossed. High hopes for it.”

With an impressive audience score of 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s fair to say that it has been well-received since its release.

Fans have also been quick to praise the film on social media over on X.
